One of Australia’s Leading Upper GI & Bariatric Surgeons Dr. David Martin

David Martin is a highly experienced upper gastrointestinal (GI) and laparoscopic surgeon with over two decades of practice across Australia’s public and private hospital systems, including Concord Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and Strathfield Private Hospital.

He is an Australian and international key opinion leader in laparoscopic upper GI surgery. His expertise spans complex hiatus hernia and reflux surgery, advanced laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, and complex revision procedures in both bariatric and anti-reflux surgery. His broader surgical repertoire also includes keyhole gallbladder surgery, oesophageal cancer resection, and laparoscopic hernia repair.

Dr Martin has developed one of the largest single-surgeon prospective databases in the Southern Hemisphere, underpinning a series of world-leading publications. These include major series on hiatus hernia, reflux, and sleeve gastrectomy, as well as a landmark cohort study comparing short- and long-term outcomes of sleeve gastrectomy and single-loop one-anastomosis gastric bypass—among the largest single-centre studies globally. His research includes multivariable analyses demonstrating durable weight loss, favourable complication profiles, and a consistent focus on safety, quality of life, and long-term patient outcomes.

A longstanding contributor to surgical leadership, Dr Martin chaired the Sydney Upper GI Surgical Society (SUGSS) for over 13 years, concluding in 2025. He continues to serve in leadership roles on Medical Advisory Committees and is a board member of the Australian & New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society (ANZMOSS) and SUGSS. He has also served on the Training Board and Executive Committee of the Australian and New Zealand Gastric and Oesophageal Surgery Association (ANZGOSA). Dr Martin is the Head of Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery at Strathfield Private Hospital and remains actively involved in policy development, registrar training, and leading live operative sessions and advanced surgical courses.

Dr Martin’s contributions to surgical innovation and safety include several Australian firsts, including early robotic oesophago-gastric procedures, the first published Australian series on single-incision laparoscopic bariatric surgery, and early international publications on single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy with bile duct exploration. He has also published on oesophageal fixation techniques in hiatus hernia and reflux surgery and was first author on a Cochrane systematic review of gallbladder surgery and common bile duct stone management. He leads one of Australia’s largest series of laparoscopic gastric cancer cases and has contributed rare prospective data on reflux procedures following bariatric surgery, including novel techniques such as the use of a falciform ligament sling in hiatus hernia repair.

Combining high-volume surgical experience with a commitment to evidence-based practice, innovation, and mentorship, Dr Martin is widely regarded as a leading authority in upper GI surgery in Australia and internationally.
