One of Australia’s Leading Upper GI & Bariatric Surgeons Dr. David Martin
David Martin is a highly experienced Upper GI and laparoscopic surgeon with over two decades of experience across Australia’s public and private hospital systems, including Concord, RPA, and Strathfield Private. An Australian and International Key Opinion Leader in Laparoscopic Upper GI surgery, his expertise spans complex hiatus hernia and reflux surgery, advanced laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, as well as complex revision procedures in both bariatric and anti-reflux surgery. His broader surgical repertoire includes keyhole gallbladder surgery, oesophageal cancer resection, and laparoscopic hernia repair.
Dr Martin has amassed one of the largest single-surgeon prospective databases in the Southern Hemisphere, underpinning a series of world-leading publications. These include one of the largest reported series on hiatus hernia, reflux and sleeve gastrectomy, as well as a landmark cohort study comparing short- and long-term outcomes of sleeve gastrectomy and single-loop one-anastomosis gastric bypass — among the largest single-centre studies globally. His research incorporates multivariable analysis of impressive weight loss durability, complication profiles with incredible safety results, with a consistent focus on safety, quality of life, and long-term patient outcomes.
A long-serving contributor to surgical leadership, Dr Martin chaired the Sydney Upper GI Surgical Society (SUGSS) for over 13 years, concluding in 2025. He continues to hold longstanding leadership roles on Medical Advisory Committees, is on the boards tor the Australian & NZ Metabolic and Obesity Surgical Society (ANZMOSS) and SUGSS, and has previously served on both the Training Board and Executive Committee of the Australian and New Zealand Gastric and Oesophageal Surgical Association (ANZGOSA). Dr Martin is the head of Upper GI & Bariatric surgery at Strathfield Private Hospital and remains actively engaged in policy development, registrar training, and leads regular live operating sessions and advanced surgical courses in Upper GI surgery.
Dr Martin’s contributions to surgical innovation and safety include several Australian firsts; the first robotic oesophago-gastric cases, the country’s first published series on single-incision laparoscopic bariatric surgery, the first international publication on single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy with bile duct exploration. He was among the first to publish outcomes on oesophageal fixation in hiatus hernia and reflux surgery, and was first author on the Cochrane systematic review of gallbladder surgery and CBD stone management. He also leads one of Australia’s largest series of laparoscopic gastric cancer cases and has produced some of the only prospective, presented data on reflux procedures following bariatric surgery, including novel techniques such as the addition of a falciform ligament sling to hiatus hernia repair.
Blending high-volume operative experience with a commitment to evidence-based practice, patient-tailored care, innovation, and mentorship, Dr Martin is regarded as a respected authority in Upper GI surgery both in Australia and internationally.
